ALBANY - Food TV star Sandra Lee is headed to surgery Tuesday to combat "an incredible monster" of an infection, she announced on her Facebook page.
The longtime domestic partner of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has suffered an infection for which she was rushed to the hospital a week ago, her spokeswoman said. The infection stems from her May 19 double mastectomy.
"I did my very best to avoid this (when I tell you I did everything, I mean everything -- modern, Eastern and holistic), but infection is an incredible monster," she said in Monday's posting. "I am a long way from where I was and a long way from where I need to be, but at this point I understand that right now I just need to complete this unexpected phase of a tough journey."
She said she and Cuomo made the decision.
"Right now," she said using a tennis analogy, "the ball is in my court and it's time for a mean backhand -- and I am taking that shot (And just so you know I DO, in fact, have one mean backhand on the tennis court! It's actually stronger than my forehand -- solid, swift and accurate). So my plan for tomorrow is game, set, match!"
The posting was confirmed by Lee's spokeswoman.
Ending her posting with "Love and Peace" and "God Bless," she continued her effort to be supportive of other cancer survivors:
"And to be absolutely clear, what I am going through is nothing compared to what many of my sisters experience," she said. "To them and their families and support systems I say: Stay strong, focus on the light and I send you my love. When I am done I WILL be lending you my backhand."
