For many Long Islanders and their loved ones, nursing homes offer living and health care alternatives when home care is no longer a viable choice.

Such facilities provide skilled care for patients, ensuring their medical and physical needs are met on a day-to-day basis on behalf of their loved ones.

Over the past year, nursing homes on Long Island have been the topic of investigations and probes that have raised questions about the quality of care patients are actually receiving.

In an effort to track potentially unsafe trends in nursing home care, Newsday has created an interactive map, located at the link above, that monitors general information for facilities, as well as known deficiencies (both relating to harm or jeopardy of a patient and not), complaints resulting in citations and the amount of fines a facility has received.
