MTA eyes Wi-Fi service for trains

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is exploring a plan to bring wireless Internet to Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station and the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North commuter lines.

The agency has invited developers to submit proposals for installing Internet service on the city's main commuter lines.

Companies that bid for the project would have to pay for it themselves. The MTA says it is facing a cash crunch and can't expand amenities right now.

It is unclear whether that would mean that riders would have to pay to use the service, or whether providers could come up with some other stream of revenue and offer it for free.- AP
