$1.3M for police radiation detection project

A $1.3-million federal Securing the Cities grant is being awarded to the New York City Police Department Friday to buy equipment for its radiation detection project.

The money will be used to pay for technology that will enable detectors around the city to send radiological data and GPS coordinates to a command center, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Congress appropriated the funds for fiscal year 2009, restoring the grant after the Obama administration cut it in its proposed budget.

"Our fight continues to get every nickel out of Washington possible in order to keep New York secure," said Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.).
