Donald Trump wasn't Rep. Peter King's first choice for the Republican presidential nominee, but the congressman from Seaford said Trump is better than his Democratic alternative.

Newsday caught up with King on the first day of the Republican National Convention at a breakfast for New York's Republican delegates. Here's what he had to say.

Question: Who are you most excited to hear speak besides Donald Trump, and why?

Answer: "I would say Gen. Flynn tonight who's a good friend and a really solid voice on national defense. He's the first one who really warned us about ISIS ... Secondly would be ... Mike Pence. I've known Mike. I really want to see how he does before a national audience ... I think he's gonna do well but I'm just interested to see how it goes."

Question: Why is Trump the best candidate to run this country?

Answer: "He's better than Hillary Clinton. He was not my choice for the nomination. With Hillary, the main issues to me are the Supreme Court, national defense and support for the police, and Donald Trump is clearly superior to Hillary in those three."

Question: What do you think the 2016 campaign says about America?

Answer: "That Americans want change, that America is fed up and that America is willing to roll the dice and gamble on new leadership because they're fed up with the old leadership."
