CALIFORNIA / Held in nursing home death

Authorities say an 81-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder for allegedly beating to death his 94-year-old roommate at an Orange County nursing home. Sheriffs spokesman Jim Amormino says William McDougall is accused of taking a bar used to hang clothes from a closet to repeatedly strike his roommate, Manh Ban Nguyen, late Friday. The Los Angeles Times reports that Nguyen, who was found beaten around the head, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

CALIFORNIA / 3 hurt in small-plane crash

Authorities say a small plane has crashed near the airport on California's Santa Catalina Island, sparking a small fire and leaving the three people on board with burn injuries. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the twin-engine Cessna 310 crashed at about 3:40 p.m. Sunday near the island's airfield, Airport in the Sky. The pilot told a sheriff's sergeant that his left engine failed shortly after takeoff. Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker says the victims - two men, 54 and 50, and a woman, 84 - all were taken to hospitals. He described their condition as stable and called them "very fortunate."

NEW JERSEY / Vigil for Rutgers student

Rutgers University has held a silent vigil for a student who committed suicide after his sexual encounter with a man in his dormitory room was secretly streamed online. Sunday's tribute to 18-year-old freshman Tyler Clementi was held on the school's campus in New Brunswick. Prosecutors say Clementi's roommate and another student used a webcam to broadcast on the Internet live images of the encounter. Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River three days later. His body was identified Thursday.

FLORIDA / Arrest in fatal bank robbery

The FBI says one man has been arrested in the robbery and killing of an armored truck guard outside a South Florida bank. The FBI said Sunday that investigators believe three other people are at large. FBI special agent John Gillies said those suspects are considered armed and extremely dangerous. Officials say Nathaniel Moss, 31, was arrested near the Bank of America branch where the security guard was killed Friday and was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and other counts. Agents say they have recovered two vehicles used in the robbery, as well as all the money taken, though they won't say how much had been stolen.

NATIONWIDE / Iran prez: Bury U.S. leaders

Iran's president is calling for U.S. leaders to be "buried" in response to threats of military attack over Tehran's nuclear program. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is known for brash rhetoric in addressing the West, but Sunday he used a deeply offensive insult in calling for an undertaker to bury U.S. leaders. The hard-line president again questioned who was behind the 9/11 attacks in the U.S. He recently returned to Tehran from a visit to New York to attend the UN General Assembly.
