KANSAS: Doctor killer gets 50 years

An anti-abortion zealot who murdered one of the few U.S. doctors to perform late-term abortions was sentenced Thursday to life in prison and won't be eligible for parole for 50 years, the maximum allowed by law. Scott Roeder, 52, faced a mandatory life term for gunning down Dr. George Tiller in Tiller's Wichita church last May. Judge Warren Wilbert could have made Roeder eligible for parole after 25 or 50 years, but gave him the harsher sentence because he said the evidence showed Roeder stalked Tiller before killing him. Wilbert also sentenced Roeder to an additional year in prison on each of two counts of aggravated assault for threatening two church ushers in the melee. Roeder testified that he killed Tiller to save unborn children.

INDIANA: Cop uses stun gun on boy

Two officers called to a home day care to subdue an unruly 10-year-old have been suspended after one used a stun gun on the boy and the other slapped him in the mouth, police said Thursday. The child suffered no significant injuries, but the officers were placed on paid administrative leave while the confrontation Tuesday at Tender Teddies is investigated. The Martinsville police chief said he believed the 94-pound boy could have been controlled without using force. The same officers responded in February to a report about trouble with the boy. This time they found him hitting, kicking and spitting on a caretaker as she held him down. He lunged at his guardian, and an officer used his stun gun to calm him down.

NEW MEXICO: 7 heads, torsos found

The first discovery was gruesome enough: a head and torso tucked inside a red biohazard tub that arrived at a Kansas City, Kan., company. Then six more heads and torsos showed up after someone apparently dismembered the bodies with a chain saw or other cutting device, police said. Authorities are investigating an Albuquerque company that was supposed to have donated the organs in the bodies to science and had the remains cremated. The company owner, Paul Montano, was arrested Thursday.
