SOUTH CAROLINA: Boy killed in park ride derailment

A train ride at a park overturned, killing a 6-year-old boy and sending a dozen children and adults to the hospital, officials say. Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said Benjamin Samuel Easler, 6, of Gaffney died Saturday. About 20 people were on the train when it crashed at Cleveland Park. County Councilman David Britt said the train was inspected Wednesday and went on several test runs before Saturday, its first day of operation for the season.

WASHINGTON: 2 eyed for FBI director

Two men who worked for President George W. Bush, including one who threatened to resign to block legally questionable anti-terror surveillance, have a chance of being asked to head the FBI, according to those familiar with the search. James Comey and Kenneth Wainstein served in national security-related posts at the Justice Department in the Bush administration. That could make for interesting Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings if President Barack Obama selects either to succeed director Robert Mueller, whose term expires Sept. 4.

NATIONWIDE: New advice on child seats

Children should ride in rear-facing car seats longer, until they are 2 years old instead of 1, according to updated advice from a medical group and a federal agency. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued separate but consistent new recommendations Monday. Both say older children who've outgrown front-facing car seats should ride in booster seats until the lap-shoulder belt fits them. Children usually can graduate from a booster seat when their height reaches 4 feet 9 inches. Those younger than 13 should ride in the backseat, the guidelines from both groups say. The advice may seem extreme to some parents, who may imagine trouble persuading older elementary school kids as old as 12 to use booster seats. But it's based on evidence from crashes. For older children, poorly fitting seat belts can cause abdominal and spine injuries in a crash.
