NEBRASKA: Kerrey wins nomination
Bob Kerrey easily won the Democratic nomination Tuesday for his old job representing Nebraska in the U.S. Senate. The seat is being vacated by Democrat Ben Nelson, who succeeded Kerrey 12 years ago but isn't seeking a third term. In the fall, Kerrey is likely to be considered the underdog in conservative Nebraska. Oregon, meanwhile, was deciding whether to give its 25 presidential delegates to Mitt Romney.
FLORIDA: Mother kills four kids, herself
A woman who fatally shot her four children before killing herself Tuesday called three of the kids who had sought help from a neighbor back to the house before firing the fatal shots, authorities said. Tonya Thomas, 33, shot her four children, said Lt. Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. "From what the neighbors said, she was very calm. She walked out and called them back. They turned around and walked back to the house," Goodyear said. The neighbor then heard gunshots and called 911. The children were Pebbles Johnson, 17; Jaxs Johnson, 15; Jazzlyn Johnson, 13; and Joel Johnson, 12.
NEW JERSEY: Not-guilty plea in ID theft
A Newark Liberty Airport security supervisor pleaded not guilty to identity theft Tuesday as details emerged about his alleged 20-year odyssey of deception, including that he may have assumed the identity of a New York man weeks before the man was murdered. Through his court-appointed attorney, Nigerian Bimbo Olumuyiwa Oyewole pleaded not guilty to one count of identity theft, a second-degree offense punishable by a maximum 10-year sentence. Municipal Court Judge Roslyn Holmes-Grant raised his bail from $75,000 to $250,000 after Deputy Attorney General Vincent Militello noted that prosecutors believe Oyewole may have used several aliases over the years. Oyewole has been placed under a federal immigration detainer, essentially a notification that he has been identified for deportation. He is charged with using the identity of Jerry Thomas, a petty criminal who was shot outside a Queens YMCA in July 1992. New York police said there is no evidence tying Oyewole to Thomas' shooting.
