CALIFORNIA: Lion mauls park intern to death

A female intern-volunteer was killed by a lion Wednesday in a private wild animal park. Cat Haven founder Dale Anderson was crying as he read a one-sentence statement about the fatal mauling at the exotic animal zoo he has operated since 1993. The 26-year-old intern was attacked when she entered the lion's enclosure, Anderson said. Sheriff's deputies responding to Cat Haven, in the Sierra Nevada foothills about 45 miles east of Fresno, found the woman lying in the enclosure with the lion nearby, sheriff's Lt. Bob Miller said. Another park worker had tried unsuccessfully luring the lion away and into a separate pen. Deputies shot and killed it so they could reach the wounded woman, Miller said. The male African lion, a 4-year-old named Couscous, had been raised at Cat Haven since it was a cub, said Tanya Osegueda of Project Survival, a nonprofit that operates the animal park.

Runoff in May for L.A. mayor

He's a Rhodes scholar. She's UCLA. He can burn up the piano keys. She loves to watch her son playing soccer. He could become Los Angeles' first Jewish mayor; she would be the first woman elected to the job. Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel, rival Democrats headed for a May 21 runoff, would put a different stamp on the top office in the nation's second most populous city. Despite the contrasts, what really stands out is how much they are alike. Both come with left-leaning pedigrees, roots in the San Fernando Valley and years of experience working the hallways and committee rooms of City Hall. A key challenge for both will be connecting with voters who supported someone else in the primary, or didn't go to the polls Tuesday.

WISCONSIN: Boy killed in pit bull attack

A young boy has died after he was attacked Wednesday by a couple of pit bulls. The Walworth County sheriff's office said the coroner's office confirmed that the boy died of his injuries in a Milwaukee-area hospital. The sheriff's office got a 911 call from a 30-year-old woman saying she and a 14-month-old boy were being attacked by her pit bulls. The animals were removed and euthanized. The woman said she and the boy suffered multiple injuries. The boy was flown to the hospital with critical injuries.
