"Be Fruitful: The Essential Guide to Maximizing Fertility and Giving Birth to a Healthy Child" (Scribner, $20) by physician Victoria Maizes includes helpful information about getting pregnant, including conventional and alternative advice. Maizes is the executive director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine.

"Intensive Parenting: Surviving the Emotional Journey through the NICU" (Fulcrum Publishing, $19.95) focuses on the experiences, feelings and relationship issues that families face when a baby is admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It was written by psychologists Deborah Davis and Mara Tesler Stein.

Author Bruce Feiler test-drives new ideas about family life with his wife and twin daughters in "The Secrets of Happy Families" (William Morrow, $25.99). Some of the things he tries include letting your kids pick their punishments and not worrying about family dinner. Feiler also is author of "The Council of Dads."
