Lazio, the first Republican to declare for governor, endorsed Paterson's unilateral delay last week of $750 million in state payments to prevent New York from running out of money. "I would have chosen a different course, but the governor deserves credit for trying to avoid insolvency," Lazio said. "He deserves more support than he's received from politicians in his own party."
Paterson thanked Lazio after being sued by education groups. "In an era when I haven't found very much ethical about a lot of people's conduct, I actually am impressed that he would say that," he said.
