Kennedy Airport is among 28 airports to take part in a new program that will speed up security checks for some travelers this year, Transportation Security Administration announced.

Passengers who are cleared to participate in the TSA "pre check" program don't have to remove their shoes, jacket or belt, remove their laptop from its case or their transparent bag from their carry on luggage for inspection.

By expediting certain frequent flyers and travelers who have been pre-vetted as non-security risks, the TSA can then "focus its efforts on passengers the agency knows less about," said the TSA in a press release.

Passengers interested in signing up for the expedited service can apply at http://www.globalentry.gov

More than 336,000 passengers have already been checked via the "pre screen" program already in effect at seven other airports in conjunction with American Airlines. US Airways, United Airlines and Alaska Airlines will also be opting into the program this year.
