The Jets acted to replenish their secondary depth yesterday, signing free-agent safety Gerald Alexander to compensate for the loss of defensive cog Jim Leonhard this week to injured reserve.

The 27-year-old Alexander has started 30 games and played in two games for Miami earlier this season before being cut. He will likely slot in as the No. 3 safety behind Eric Smith and Brodney Pool.

Second-year Jets cornerback Kyle Wilson started alongside Alexander when they both starred at Boise State in 2006. Alexander was the No. 61 overall pick by the Detroit Lions in 2007 and has played for Carolina, Jacksonville and Miami.
