Mayor Bill de Blasio and first lady Chirlane McCray trudged door-to-door in Iowa last month to campaign for Hillary Clinton, but their two college-student children appear to favor her opponent for the Democratic presidential nomination, Bernie Sanders.

McCray, in an interview published Wednesday on the feminist blog Jezebel, characterized conversations about presidential politics with Chiara and Dante de Blasio, 21 and 18, as “ongoing.”

Asked more directly if her children prefer the U.S. senator from Vermont over the former secretary of state, McCray laughed and said, “Uh, well, it’s possible.”

A mayoral spokeswoman said Chiara and Dante “have their own minds and will be making their own decisions.”

Clinton has struggled to woo young voters who have been gravitating toward the more progressive Sanders.

McCray in the Jezebel interview also appeared to contradict de Blasio on the proposed closing of the violence-plagued Rikers Island jail facility. He has voiced doubts about its practicality and cost, but McCray called it a “great idea” in part because the facilities there don’t provide adequate mental health care.

Asked about the remark, another mayoral spokesman responded: “The mayor and the first lady agree that closing Rikers is a noble goal, but the mayor also made clear many significant challenges must be addressed before that can be achieved.”
