Sometimes Hudson Valley traffic can be a bear, but on Monday morning, it was a horse.

Drivers on Route 303 in Blauvelt hit a standstill about 8 a.m. when a horse appeared and began cantering up and down the road, according to police and eyewitnesses.

"A lot of traffic just stopped and [the] horse was trotting along one side of Route 303, going up and down, and then goes across the street and trots down the other side," said Shoko Saito, who saw the drama unfold. "People got out of the cars and didn't know what to do."

It was not clear how the horse got free, but a spokesman for Orangetown police said the horse romped about for about 10 minutes, returned to the West Carbery Stables without police intervention and was secured there.

"The last thing we need is a horse running around on its own," he said.

A call to the stable owners was not immediately returned.
