A Bronx family wailed with grief outside a hospital yesterday after 11-year-old Russell Smith was killed trying to cross a busy Bronx street with milk he just bought his baby brother, according to reports. “My son’s body was broken,” Monique Mitchell sobbed, the Daily News reported. “His lip was split, and his teeth were crushed. That was my boy.”
Russell Smith, a fifth grader, was struck by the side view mirror of a grey Honda CR-V as he tried to cross the Grand Concourse near E. 183rd street, according to reports that cited police and witnesses.
Witnesses said the boy was crossing against a red light, and a crossing guard at the intersection was being questioned by police after the accident, the Daily News reported.
The driver was not charged, reports said.
Outside Bronx-Lebanon Hospital the boy’s distraught stepfather, Nosakhar Orensaye, looked to the sky and begged for answers.
"Russell, tell me what happened,” he pleaded, the Daily News reported. “ Russell, tell me what happened. Please, bring him back!”
