No need for a tux, just keep it “clean and neat,” cabbies are starting to be told.
The Taxi and Limo Commission approved a new dress code for yellow cab drivers on Thursday requiring them to look professional or face a $25 fine.
The previous rule, which was written 20 years ago, had banned particular types of clothing, including tank tops, swimwear and cut-offs.
Driver advocates were quick to criticize the vote.
“The disheartening thing is how the TLC takes action on a non-problem but continues to ignore real problems,” said Bhairavi Desai, head of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, citing issues such as healthcare and safety.
TLC officials refused to comment.
