'Twisted Savage Dragon Funnies'
The off-beat backup stories of Erik Larson's "The Savage Dragon" comic are coming into the spotlight with "Twisted Savage Dragon Funnies." And to celebrate the collection's launch, Jim Hanley's Universe is bringing together the indie artists responsible for creating it, including Brooklyn cartoonist Dean Haspiel, who won an Emmy for the HBO series "Bored to Death." (Wednesday, 6-8 p.m., FREE, Jim Hanley's Universe, 4 W. 33rd St., jhuniverse.blogspot.com)

'Star Trek'
Head over to the Final Frontier - or maybe just Tompkins Square Park - for the EPIX Movie Free-for-All screening of the latest "Star Trek" film, with comedian Gilbert Gottfried introducing the event. Up for grabs will be an iPad, flip-cam and five four-pack tickets to the Rose Center at the Museum of Natural History - but, sadly, no tricorder. (Thursday, 8 p.m., FREE, Tompkins Square Park, E. 7th St. btwn Aves. A and B, freeforall.epixhd.com/calendar)

The Beets Live at the Gantries
No, we're not sending you to see a bunch of red root vegetables in concert. This indie-rock trio from Jackson Heights reinvents '60s garage rock with inspiration from the likes of the Beatles and the Ramones. They play a FREE waterfront concert as part of the Live at the Gantries series tomorrow. (Tuesday, 7 p.m., FREE, Gantry Plaza State Park, 49th Ave. and Center Blvd., Long Island City, liveatthegantries.com)

'La Boheme'
Being a New Yorker, you're most likely familiar with Jonathan Larson's "Rent." But did you know it's very closely based on Puccini's "La Boheme?" Get some operatic education at the New York Grand Opera's FREE staging of "La Boheme" in Central Park this Wednesday. (Wednesday, 7:30 p.m., FREE, Naumberg Bandshell, Central Park mid-park at 72nd St., newyorkgrandopera.org/home)

'Bring It On'
You better be ready to bring it to nab the perfect spot on the lawn of Valentino Pier Park in Red Hook tomorrow. So bust out those spirit fingers on your jazz hands and get ready to cheer for the Toros or the Clovers at this FREE Red Hook Summer Movies screening of the classic cheerleading farce. (Tuesday, 8:30 p.m., FREE, Valentino Pier, Red Hook, Brooklyn, redhookfilms.org)
