In "Where Chefs Eat," (Phaidon) chefs selected their favorite places to dine in cities across the globe. Many selections were to be expected (Daniel, Jean Georges), but there were some surprises, too.
We chose four unexpected choices in NYC and asked the recommending chefs to explain.

-- Alex Young of Zingerman's Road House in Ann Arbor, Mich., chose the Halal Cart on 53rd St. and Sixth Ave.
"I will eat gyros there before a fancy dinner, after a fancy dinner, for lunch, before lunch, after lunch, and then I'll get several for the airplane ride home. ... The flavor of the meat and the dressing is perfect! I strongly recommend a dose of their hot sauce as well, and if you're feeling "formal," have the gyro plate. ... There are generally 30 to 50 people in line in the evenings."
