While they are polar opposites in terms of politics and could be presidential rivals in 2016, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has no problem defending his counterpart across the Hudson, according to an interview in the January issue of GQ magazine.
Cuomo said New Jersey Gov. Christie has "done well" in his first term, particularly how he handled speculation that he might run for the Republican presidential nomination.
Cuomo, a Democrat, also stressed he shares a "good working relationship" with Christie. They each pushed fiscally conservative agendas in the face of union opposition, while Christie last year killed a multibillion-dollar project to build a commuter train tunnel across the Hudson River.
So when it comes to Christie's girth, which became a national punch line, Cuomo reportedly told his ABC newsman brother, Chris Cuomo, "So what?"
"Why don't you tell your friends in the New York media to get the hell out of New York and go into the rest of the country ... move around where everybody's not spending sixteen hours a day in the gym, and take a look at what people look like -- people with real lives and jobs," the governor reportedly told his brother.
In the interview, which hits newsstands nationwide Tuesday, Cuomo also dishes about his perceived arrogance, the Cuomo family dynasty, and gal pal and Food Network star Sandra Lee, whom he calls Sandy.
