Cuts to pest control aides will hit Manhattan hard

The Manhattan office of city pest control aides will be virtually eliminated under the city health department’s budget-cutting plan.

Four of six workers in Manhattan and one of two supervisors will be axed under a plan to cut 70 percent of the city’s pest control aide jobs, according to officials with the municipal union, DC37, which received a notification letter from the health department last week.

The workers, who clean garbage where rodents have been spotted, normally operate in crews of seven.

In addition, Queens will lose 11 of 15 workers, Brooklyn 16 of 27 and the Bronx 10 out 21, the letter stated.

“It’s virtually impossible to do any proper job,” said Fritz Reid, head of the union local that includes the pest control aides.
