Five women in New York City's Emergency Medical Service have settled a gender discrimination lawsuit against the city for $1 million.
The suit claimed that all of the women were passed up for promotion several times, while less qualified male counterparts climbed the career ladder instead.
The $1 million settlement covers five years' worth of back wages and compensatory damages.
The women's attorney, Yetta Kurland, calls it a win for the five, and for women in the workforce.
The city's Law Department says the settlement was appropriate and that the FDNY is dedicated to "fostering an equitable and positive work environment for all."
The suit was filed in 2006. Two more gender discrimination cases against the FDNY are pending.
