Fifth man charged in plot to help Islamic State, prosecutors say

Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn have charged a fifth man in a plot to provide assistance to the Islamic State terror group that made headlines earlier this year.

A superseding indictment filed Thursday accused Akmal Zakirov, an Uzbeki citizen, of being part of a group supplying funds to help two men -- Akhror Saidakhmetov and Abdurasul Juraboev -- travel to Syria from New York to help wage jihad.

The alleged plot came to light when Juraboev posted messages on a website linked to the Islamic State comments on engaging in violent acts to support the group in the United States, such as possibly killing President Barack Obama.

Zakirov, 29, pleaded not guilty during a brief appearance in federal court in Brooklyn Thursday and was detained.
