A Staten Island man has contacted the first human case of West Nile Virus this year, according to the Health Department.

The unidentified man, who is in his 50s, was hospitalized with viral meningitis and has since been released. The city declined to release any other details on the man's health.

The virus, which was first discovered in the U.S. in 1999 and is spread by mosquitoes, is at its peak from mid to late summer. In response to the case, the city has sprayed for mosquitoes in Staten Island and is reminding New Yorkers to cover up and wear ample bug spray.
