Having a draft before free agency is not the normal way of doing business in the NFL. But given the ramifications of the labor situation, Giants general manager Jerry Reese is making the best of it.

Reese said he’ll handle next week’s draft much like his four previous ones, and worry about filling holes with veteran free agents once owners and players reach a new collective bargaining agreement.

“This league is all about making adjustments,” Reese said Thursday at his pre-draft press conference. “It’s what we do. All we can do right now is the draft. We’ll have different scenarios and be ready to pounce once free agency starts.”

Whether the Giants will try to fill a definite need at outside linebacker, defensive tackle, defensive end or offensive lineman with the 19th overall pick next Thursday remains a mystery, despite rampant speculation that a linebacker might be coming the Giants’ way.

“There are good players at every position,” Reese said. “If a good linebacker is available at that time, we need to pick him. If a defensive lineman is there at 19 and he’s the best player, we’ll be deeper on thed efensive line.

“We want to create competition at every position,” he added.
