It’s spring, and in addition to warm weather, flowers and blooming trees, the turning of the season also means al fresco dining, bars with windows thrown open wide and new menu items intended to thrill the taste buds.
We’ve compiled a list of new favorites, and some things we can all look forward to. It is the time for renewal, after all, and a time to celebrate, so treat yourself!
Spicy tuna pizza
Mira Sushi opened last month in the burgeoning foodie mecca of the Flatiron District. The restaurant creates adventurous sushi but is also an izakaya — a Japanese take on a bistro that pairs drinks with small plates.
At Mira, sushi and izakaya meet in one dish that is mind-blowing in concept and execution: the spicy tuna pizza. The ingredients — from sushi tuna to spicy mayo to the crispy tempura-like crust — are not reminiscent of pizza, but the presentation surely is.

Pitchers of cocktails
There’s nothing better in warm weather than drinks with friends.
And while the communal pitcher of beer with four glasses is a tried and true way to imbibe, Pounds & Ounces has an updated version perfect for New Yorkers circa now: 33 ounces of the same drink for you and your posse.

New spot for McGown
James McGown of South Brooklyn Pizza and Brooklyn Buschenschank in Carroll Gardens (and formerly P.J. Hanley’s in the same neighborhood, which just closed) opens One Twenty-Two First Avenue in mid-May. The small plates, artisanal pizza and cocktail joint will feature two working fireplaces and a backyard garden.
Samm Dimakis of Dos Caminos is in the kitchen and the menu will pay homage to the area’s history, with dishes like pizza L.E.S., with smoked salmon, caper cream and red onion. One Twenty-Two First Avenue, 122 First Ave., 212-533-2809
Tequila and views
The Hudson New York hotel introduces two new elements to its dining and drinking scene this spring. The Sky Terrace, a luxurious rooftop party lounge with unobstructed Hudson River and Statue of Liberty views, is open now and serving 10 varieties of Sangria. Tequila Park, located in the hotel’s courtyard, is opening in the coming weeks (hopefully by Cinco de Mayo), and will feature tacos, 40 tequilas and specialty margaritas like the grapefruit-rosemary and the bourbon-hibiscus. Carmellini’s French bistro
This much-buzzed about spot from Andrew Carmellini (The Dutch, Locanda Verde) has been open just over a week. If you’re a fan of high-art cooking, a visit to this restaurant is in order. Gowanus backyard dining
The Pines is selling its new backyard garden (which is opening May 18) as a hangout, and why not? The Gowanus Canal never sounded so appealing! We’re sure menu items like Grilled Halumi with Ramps and Celery Mustarda and Half Lobsters with Lardo and Vanilla Butter will have the crowds rushing in.
