A New York politician's girlfriend has been called to testify at his assault trial.
State Sen. Hiram Monserrate has pleaded not guilty. Karla Giraldo — who now says her face was slashed by accident — testified Wednesday in Queens that that she felt harassed by detectives and prosecutors.
Assistant District Attorney Scott Kessler has said Monserrate smashed Giraldo's face with a water glass during an argument.
Testimony showed she required 40 stitches after the Dec. 19 incident.
Grainy building surveillance footage shows Monserrate grabbing and shoving Giraldo as she clung, bleeding and screaming, to a door frame.
If convicted of the top charge, second-degree assault, Monserrate will lose his Senate seat.
