Woody Johnson on Thursday came to the defense of Jets captains Santonio Holmes and Mark Sanchez, who since the team's season-ending loss toMiami on Jan. 1 have been ripped by current and former teammates for aperceived lack of leadership.
The Jets owner told reporters that Holmes, who is guaranteed $7.75 million next season, is possibly "one of the best players we have ever had here." He also contradicted comments by some Jets players that Sanchez was lazy.
"He's the first guy in here and the last guy to leave," he said of Sanchez.
Running back LaDainian Tomlinson said Wednesday on Showtime's "Inside the NFL" that the behind-the-scenes feud between Sanchez and Holmes was "as bad as I've ever been around," adding that he wasn't sure if the quarterback and receiver should remain teammates.
But Johnson said he believes Holmes and Sanchez will "get back on the right page."
