McQueen exhibit at Met breaks records for visitors, among top 10

“Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” was a monster hit for the Met, but the exhibit on the late British fashion designer’s work didn’t top such heavies as Picasso, the Mona Lisa and King Tut.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced Monday that the show, which closed Sunday at midnight, was its eighth-most-visited show ever.

Here’s a look at how McQueen fared in the top 10:

1. Treasures of Tutankhamun, 12/20/78 - 4/14/79: 1,360,957 visitors

2. Mona Lisa, 2/7/63 – 3/4/63 : 1,077,521 visitors

3. The Vatican Collections: The Papacy and Art, 2/26/83 –5/12/83 : 896,743 visitors

4. Painters in Paris: 1895-1950, 3/ 7/00 – 1/14/01 : 883,620 visitors

5. Origins of Impressionism, 9/27/94 –1/8/95 : 794,108 visitors

6. The Horses of San Marco, 2/1/80 –8/31/80 : 742,221 visitors

7. Picasso in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 4/27/10 – 8/15/10 : 703,256 visitor

8. Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, 5/4/11 – 8/7/11: 661,509 visitors

9. Jeff Koons on the Roof, 4/22/08 – 10/26/08: 657,801 visitors

10. Doug + Mike Starn on the Roof : Big Bambú, 4/27/10 – 10/31/10 : 631,064 visitors
