The cast of Broadway megahit “Hamilton” did not throw away their shot Friday night when Vice President-elect Mike Pence was in the audience.
Pence took his seat for the multi-Tony-winning musical about Alexander Hamilton, with a multiracial cast, to boos and cheers from the audience, according to multiple social media reports.
Several lyrics and the actors singing them took on added significance, especially in light of President-elect Donald Trump’s stances on immigration and Pence’s on LGBT rights.
The line “Immigrants, we get the job done,” by openly gay Javier Munoz as Hamilton and the Marquis de Lafayette (Chris Lee), always gets cheers. This time, it got a standing ovation, according to social media.
At the curtain call, Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, made a statement on behalf of the cast.
“Vice President-elect Pence, welcome. Thank you for joining us at Hamilton -- an American Musical.
“We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights. We hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values, and work on behalf of ALL of us. Thank you.”
