When reviewing a comedy, you could go on about the thought put into the jokes on film, the cleverness of the satire or the finely tuned aesthetic approach. But none of that really matters.
At the end of the day, there’s a single question that must be considered: Did you laugh?
And when it comes to “Hell Baby,” the new horror spoof from “Reno 911!” creators Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, this critic’s answer is yes — often and embarrassingly loudly, including a full-on, minutes-spanning fit during one extended sight gag.
So the fact that the movie is slapdash in its conception, hardly blessed with what you’d call refined taste, truly means nothing. It feels like it’s just about the one-billionth movie to lampoon the horror genre, but so what? It’s hilarious.
This giant mound of stupidity centers on an expectant couple (Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb) who find their New Orleans fixer-upper is haunted by an evil demon. Keegan Michael Key (of Comedy Central’s “Key & Peel”) plays the very friendly man squatting in their crawl space.
The gags fly at a rapid quip, blessed with the makers’ deft absurdist timing. I won’t spoil any of them for you. You’ll thank me later.
