The MTA is turning over more information to app developers and offering cash prizes as incentives for new and better transit apps.
Although the agency already lists dozens of apps on its website, it hopes the new information, including detailed subway movement on the Lexington Ave. lines from May and performance data from 2008 to the present, will lead to greater app innovation and help commuters better navigate the city.
The MTA began releasing its information online last January. Prior to then, data was only available on CD by request.
Submissions are due in September. Straphangers and a panel of judges will vote on their favorite new apps in the fall and a winner will be chosen in November.
The grand prize is $5,000.
