The MTA is having trouble taking out the trash.
Overnight subway construction is keeping garbage-collection trains from making all stops to collect trash from platform canisters, Transit President Thomas Prendergast said at the agency’s monthly meeting yesterday. What’s more, trucks that pick up subway garbage at the street level are often broken down, the transit chief said.
Prendergast said the MTA was trying to devise “out of the box” solutions to remove the trash collected by the 3,500 canisters that are emptied three times each day.
Other developments at yesterday’s meeting:
* The agency released a critical assessment of its performance during the December blizzard that crippled service for days. The report called for better communication with riders, ways to get employees back from vacation in emergencies and better snow removal equipment. It also referenced the saga of an A train that was stuck for hours in the snow, but didn’t offer specific ways to ensure that wouldn’t happen again.
* Subway service on the numbered lines was slowest again in April. The Nos. 4 and 5 trains were the worst offenders, being on-schedule less than 70 percent of the time. The MTA blamed maintenance work on the downtown track.
* Crime on the subway again increased. There were 28 more grand larcenies this May compared to the same month last year. Overall, such thefts are up 21 percent year over year through May 31. The NYPD has previously cited cell-phone theft as the main problem.
In other MTA news, the agency has installed protective shields for bus drivers on five buses after a passenger attacked a bus driver last week. One hundred more barriers will be put in as part of a pilot program.
