New amphitheater to open in Bronx park

Bronx and city Parks Department officials Thursday evening will mark a new amphitheater at Soundview Park -- part of $15 million in amenities and upgrades to the green space -- with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and free movie night.

Bronx Borough president Ruben Diaz Jr. and Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver will be on hand to celebrate the opening of the amphitheater, with festivities to begin at 6 p.m. The facility features a "performance lawn."

The movie "Yogi Bear" will be screened and a free yoga lesson for children will be provided.

In addition to the amphitheater, the upgrades begun under former Mayor Michael Bloomberg's PlaNYC initiative to Soundview Park include a track-and-field complex with a soccer field and a playground.

The 205-acre park, called "the Gateway to the Bronx River," was built on the site of a former landfill.
