Brian Cashman has already had a personal meeting with Rangers left-hander Cliff Lee, the ace of the free-agent market. And he has begun talks with the agents for Yankee mainstays Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.
The next step for Cashman is feeling out his fellow GMs during the next three days at the GM meetings in Orlando, Fla., where the seeds of Winter Meetings deals often germinate.
With names such as Kansas City’s Zack Greinke, San Diego’s Adrian Gonzalez, and Milwaukee’s Prince Fielder floating around, Cashman might be on the lookout for a young star to add to his aging lineup. As he awaits Andy Pettitte’s decision on his pitching future, Cashman might well chat up the agent for Rockies left-hander Jorge de la Rosa, who went 8-7 with a 4.22 ERA last season.
One thing is almost certain, though. He won’t be signing Lee this week. The lefty’s agent, Darek Braunecker, won’t be attending the meetings.
