A boy is dead after a 73-year-old man reversed his Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle into a restaurant in the Bronx and then drove off Thursday evening, the NYPD said.
Police said the man, whom they have not identified, reversed into the front window of Kennedy's Chicken and Sandwiches, a restaurant at 3275 Westchester Ave. in Pelham Bay, at about 5:30 p.m., crashing into a group of three -- two children and a man -- who were sitting together inside. The driver fled, heading west on Westchester Avenue, police said.
Traffic enforcement agents were stopped at a red light on Westchester Avenue when they were alerted to the SUV by a passerby, and they stopped the Mercedes at the intersection of Westchester and Continental avenues, police said.
The 7-year-old boy, identified as Ethan Villavicencio of the Bronx, suffered trauma to his body and was pronounced dead after being rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, police said. The 5-year-old girl and a man, 34, are listed in stable condition at the hospital, police said.
The driver was taken into police custody. The case remains under investigation, police said.
