NYPD task force busts violent Brooklyn gang, police say

An NYPD investigation busted 15 drug trafficking gang members, dismantling the gun-toting operation that brought "havoc" to Brooklyn neighborhoods where an innocent bystander was shot this summer.

"This is a violent, deadly gang with no respect for the life and the people from the Brooklyn neighborhoods where they created havoc," said Police Commissioner William Bratton. He commended the newly formed gang task force based out of South Brooklyn, where shooting incidents and homicides have increased.

"These are mindless thugs with no conception of life and morals," Bratton said. He criticized the gang's leader, a Billboard chart-topping rapper whose lyrics celebrate violence and demean women.

Deputy Chief James Essig of the Brooklyn South Violence Reduction Task Force said the rapper Ackquille Jean Pollard, aka Bobby Shmurda, was arrested Wednesday when leaving a Manhattan recording studio. Police said they seized 10 guns in the studio's stairwell. Police said they also found crack and two guns in the car that Pollard, 20, was in with fellow gang member Nicolas McCoy, 20. Pollard and McCoy, both of Brooklyn, were charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

Several of the guns were linked to the homicide of a rival gang member, police said. Another gun was used in a daylight gang shootout during which several bullets struck a woman in the neck as she was walking on a sidewalk in July.
