There have been reality competition shows on a variety of subjects, from dancing to cooking to running a business.
And if that wasn't enough - and it might in fact be enough - now we're getting celebrities in a diving competition.
Take a moment to let that sink in.
"Splash" premieres tonight on ABC with 10 celebrities of various levels of fame, from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (oooooo!) to Rory Bushfield (whoooo?), facing off in a diving showdown. Olympic gold medal winning diver Greg Louganis helps train the contestants and the judges include Steve Foley, a USA Dive Team director, and David Boudia, who took the gold in platform diving in London last year. "Blossom" star Joey Lawrence hosts with the show with ESPN's Charissa Thompson.
As unreal as this sound, there will be viewers who turn in each week to see these sort-of/sort-of-not famous folks plummeting into a pool of desperation.
Desperation to be remembered. Desperation to be known.
The truth is, this is bottom of the barrel stuff. Or would it be bottom of the pool? And I know - there's no such thing as bad publicity, but how good can this be for one's career?
And I'm basing this just on the clips - I haven't even seen the show. No screeners were offered.
But - and sorry in advance to my wife - I'll be watching too. If only to see the pure hilarity of comic Louie Anderson plummeting into a pool of water.
Oh, come on, you want to see that, too.
"Splash" premieres Tuesday night at 8 on ABC/7.
