Oreo: Not just milk's favorite cook, but now the LGBT community's.
The cookie company posted a photo of a six-layered, rainbow-colored oreo on its Facebook page to celebrate its 100-year anniversary, setting off both sides of the gay rights debate.
The image, captioned “Proudly support love!” and posted Monday, has received hundreds of thousands of likes and shares on the social network, and comments have ranged from highly supportive to outrage.
"I don't even like Oreo cookies that much, but I love that gesture of acceptance. Good job :)" reads one supportive comment.
On the other side of the debate, one commenter said he will "never eat another oreo as long as i live!”
Kraft, which owns Oreo, doesn't plan to make the multi-colored treat, but a Change.org petition is pushing to make the Photoshopped sweet become a reality. It had racked up more than 1,800 signatures as of Wednesday evening.
In a statement, Kraft said it isn't worried about the vocal online threats of boycott, and that it hopes to honor cultural milestones.
“There has been a lot of buzz about the ‘Pride’ image and the positive comments have far outnumbered any negative comments,” said Basil Maglaris, associate director of corporate affairs for Kraft Foods.
“The new online campaign brings to life trending topics, pop culture news, milestones or celebrations using images of the iconic cookie,” Maglaris added.
In a tweet, GLAAD showed its own appreciation for the campaign:
