It’s quitting time for outdoor smoking in places such as the city’s parks, pedestrian plazas and beaches.

The outdoor puffing ban, which was passed in February but kicks in today, is intended to shield New Yorkers from second-hand smoke. Violators face fines of up to $50.

Smokers got their final puffs in yesterday, reportedly gathering en masse in areas such as Union Square and the plazas in Times Square, both of which will fall under the ban.
