Prequels to legendary 'Watchmen' set to debut

"Before Watchmen"

Who will be reading the new "Watchmen"?

DC Entertainment announced Wednesday that it would be releasing new stories featuring the characters from the comic series, long considered one of the finest comic books ever created.

Originally written by Alan Moore and drawn by Dave Gibbons, the upcoming line of seven books - dubbed "Before Watchmen" - will feature some of today's top writers and artists crafting prequel stories.

The seven titles, due out this summer, include "Rorschach," "Minutemen," "Comedian," "Dr. Manhattan," "Nite Owl," Ozymandias" and "Silk Spectre."

"The original series of 'Watchmen' is the complete story that Alan Moore and I wanted to tell," Gibbons said in a statement. "However, I appreciate DC's reasons for this initiative and the wish of the artists and writers involved to pay tribute to our work. May these new additions have the success they desire."

Moore, who is no longer involved with DC, called the new line "completely shameless" in a New York Times article Wednesday.
