Rex Ryan has a message for Colts star Peyton Manning: Saturday’s playoff showdown is “personal.”
After a crushing 30-17 loss to the Colts in last year’s AFC Championship Game, the Jets’ tough-talking coach has zeroed in on Manning and hopes to send him packing in their AFC wild-card game at 8 p.m. Saturday.
“With Peyton Manning, I want to beat him,” Ryan said yesterday. “I don’t know when I’m going to beat him but I want it to be Saturday. Is it personal? … Absolutely.”
He added: “You can’t mention Indianapolis without saying, ‘Peyton Manning and Indianapolis.’ … I respect the heck out of this guy, but it’s like, ‘I’m going to beat him one day and I just hope it’s this Saturday.’ ”
Colts injuries have subdued Manning’s performance this season, but Ryan said he just wants to win. He added that the Jets will be healthy and ready.
But having touted his Super Bowl ambitions all season, Saturday’s game may show whether he can back them up.
“Everything we talked about was getting to this point right now, and we’re here,” Ryan said. “I can’t express how excited I am about this opportunity.”
Ryan first lost to Manning’s Colts in the playoffs in 2006, when Ryan was a Baltimore Ravens assistant.
A rep for Manning didn’t return calls for comment.
