Contoversy can't keep Rihanna and Nicki Minaj down.

RiRi - who is back together with controversial ex Chris Brown - and Minaj - embroiled in "American Idol" drama involving rival judge Mariah Carey - are at the top of the American Music Awards nominations pack.

Both ladies scored four nods apiece when the noms for the 40th annual awards were announced Tuesday.

In the artist of the year category, Rihanna will battle it out with Justin Bieber, Drake, Maroon 5 and Katy Perry (Minaj wasn't nominated). RiRi, Minaj, Perry and Kelly Clarkson are all up for the pop/rock female artist award, while Bieber, Flo Rida, Pitbull and Usher are up for the guys' version.
