Crooks have been cleaning out newsstands across the subway system in a rash of robberies this year, police reported Monday.
In January, one enterprising robber, who has since been nabbed, stole from 10 newsstands in Manhattan subway stations, targeting those along the Lexington Avenue and Broadway lines, police said.
“He would take the money out of the drawer, and if he felt like, he would take their personal property, too,” a police spokesman said. Among the items stolen were personal cell phones.
Brian Wheat, 46, was arrested in January and charged him with multiple counts of robbery and burglary.
Last month, another newsstand was burglarized in the subways. Police yesterday could not provide specifics on the case.
Subway robberies are up 2 percent this year when compared to the same period last year, according to police data.
