Short hair is fierce this season — and, one by one, celebrities are chopping off their luscious locks. “It is a very strong and elegant statement,” said Oscar Blandi, owner of Oscar Blandi Salon. Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams and Carey Mulligan are all rocking the trend “in a classic and beautiful way,” Blandi said.
Get the look: “I find it to be exceptionally well-worn by people with angular faces, but anyone can wear this style, as long as it is tailored well and specifically for their face shape,” Blandi said. Styling-wise, the pixie is a “very wash-and-wear” cut that shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to style, Blandi said.
What you’ll need: No blowdryer required! Create texture with pomade while hair is still a bit damp, then apply mousse to the roots — all while hair is air-drying. Finish the look with a polish or gloss product for shine. “Another thing I love ... is that [the pixie] can be dressed up with a headband or barrette to up its level of sophistication,” he said.
OMBRE HIGHLIGHTS (Jessica Biel)
We all like to lighten up in the summer — and, this season, it’s all about creating hair color that looks like you’ve spent time in the sun. “I’m seeing a lot of depth at the roots and lighter ends,” said celebrity colorist Kyle White, whose clients include Mariah Carey and Megan Hilty. “This happens naturally on surfer chicks and girls who spend time on the beach.” Achieve it by getting ombre highlights, which White calls the “latest evolution of the ombre trend.”
Get the look: “The trick to doing it the right way is to never make the ends of your hair more than two or three shades lighter than the root color,” said White, lead colorist at Oscar Blandi Salon. “The lighter tips should be painted onto the hair to avoid having an all-over solid ring, which is why this look is softer and more natural than the past ombre.” The beauty of the trend? “After summer is over, you just trim your ends and are ready for your next color change,” White said.
What you’ll need: It’s always important to protect color-treated hair. Some of White’s must-haves are a good shampoo and conditioner formulated for color-treated hair, a hat or scarf to cover up locks at the beach and a deep conditioner to be used once a week.
TEXTURED BEACH HAIR (Karlie Kloss)
The weather may be warming up, but you don’t have to jump in the ocean to get great beach texture. “This season is about giving hair a glamorous grungy look, as opposed to perfect beach waves,” said celebrity hairstylist Oribe, who’s worked with Jennifer Lopez and Karlie Kloss.
Get the look: This look is simple and easy to create, with little effort required. “It’s not about torturing hair, so put down the curling iron and embrace your natural texture,” said Oribe, co-founder of Oribe Hair Care. “It’s undone, modern and sexy.”
What you’ll need: Use a product, like Oribe’s Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray, on wet or dry hair to separate and clump the hair to give it gorgeous texture and shine. If you need more control, use a hair oil before styling.
