Emmy ... that’s what my teammates call me.
I’m kind of a fly-under-the-radar guy, but I have to say — living here in New York City, playing for an Original Six team, with teammates who I can truly call my best friends — it is hard not to come out of your shell as a Ranger.
The team just got back from a fairly long road trip. Although trips like this can be intense, it is a great opportunity for us to bond as a team and, well ... I won’t complain about being in the warm weather.
The toughest part for me about being on the road is being away from my wife. We just got married over the summer and spending time apart is always tough. She is my biggest fan, and I am hers, as she is currently working on her own dream which is to become a dermatologist. While she finishes up her residency, we make sure to talk every day, which makes up for the times we are away from each other.
I just experienced my first real shopping trip in New York, with a visit to Tiffany’s ... wow. I love when I am able to surprise my wife with something special. I realize how fortunate I am to be in my position, so it is just as special to be able to give back to the community.
I’m really looking forward to taking part in the Rangers' annual Toys For Tots Toy Drive on Dec. 7 with some of my teammates: Boyler (Brian Boyle), Gilly (Matt Gilroy), Boogy (Derek Boogaard), Sauer (Michael Sauer) and Step (Derek Stepan). Being away from my family during the holidays is tough, but getting the opportunity to do stuff like this helps make up for that!
You too can help, too (and meet my teammates and me) by stopping by the Theatre Lobby at Madison Square Garden and donating a toy on Dec. 7. We will be there between 4 and 7 p.m., so mark your calendar and come on by!
