Onion lovers may have another thing to cry about, as a state senate committee reportedly will OK sweet corn today as the New York’s official veggie.
The two crops were pitted head-to-head last month to become the state’s first official vegetable, but the Senate Investigations and Government Operations Committee may clear the way for sweet corn to take the top honor.
“That’s the largest crop,” said committee chairman Sen. Carl Marcellino, told the Daily News.
If approved, the vote could mean smooth sailing for sweet corn when the full Senate votes on it in the coming week.
Sen. David Carlucci (D-Rockland County) started this food fight last month when he introduced legislature to give the title to the onion. Sen. Michael Nozzolio (R-Seneca County), who has championed rival sweet corn since 2007, fought back, introducing his own measure for corn.
Offices for Marcellino, Carlucci and Nozzolio did not returned calls for comment.
