Not only has Hollywood run out of new ideas, it's apparently run out of new titles too.

We've noticed a distinct trend cropping up during the past decade, and it hits again this weekend with the new "Planet of the Apes" film. It's the rise of the use of "The Rise of ... ."

'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' (2011)
What rises? Damn dirty apes!
Who's in it? James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, Tom Felton
What's it about? This is a prequel showing how the apes evolved into intelligent creatures as well as the beginning of the battle for control of the earth. Things probably won't go well for the humans, since the film is titled "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."
See it or skip it? Advance buzz is pretty good, so see it, but you might want to go to a matinee.

'Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer' (2007)
What rises? A silvery alien on a surfboard
Who's in it? Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, Ioan Gruffudd, Julian McMahon, Doug Jones
What's it about? The alien arrives on earth and fights both the Fantastic Four and their mortal enemy, Dr. Doom. They soon discover that he's the herald for Galactus, a huge cloud-like entity that devours worlds. Uh oh.
See it or skip it? See it, but only if it's on cable.

'Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines' (2003)
What rises? A lady Terminator
Who's in it? Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nick Stahl, Claire Danes, Kristanna Loken
What's it about? There's another, more advanced Terminator (The T-X, a female killing machine played by Loken) sent back in time to find John Connor (Stahl). The classic Ah-nold Terminator is also sent back in time by the good guys to protect John. Meanwhile, Skynet is starting to take control of the military's computers. Those are your rising machines.
See it or skip it? See it. "T3" is an underrated addition to the franchise and a heck of a good time.

'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' (2009)
What rises? A ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world.
Who's in it? Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Ray Park, Rachel Nichols, Sienna Miller, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Christopher Eccleston
What's it about? A pair of soldiers are recruited into G.I. Joe, a top-secret military unit, in this adaptation of the Hasbro toy line. The Joes are facing off against Cobra, a clandestine organization bent on world conquest.
See it or skip it? Definitely see it. I'm in the minority, but I thought "G.I. Joe" was a fun action flick and a love letter to my favorite toy line as a kid.

'Underworld: Rise of the Lycans' (2009)
What rises? Werewolves
Who's in it? Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy, Rhona Mitra
What's it about? The third installment of this terrible horror series is a prequel, revealing the backstory of the feud between the vampires and the lycans.
See it or skip it? Skip it and the rest of the franchise.

'Rise of the Batman'?
There's another "Rise" move coming out next year, but they seem to have gotten the title wrong: "The Dark Knight Rises." We hope director Christopher Nolan comes to his senses and retitles this film "Rise of the Batman" before it comes out.
