The bassist and keyboardist of Brooklyn art-rock favorites TV on the Radio died yesterday, just a month after the band announced he was diagnosed with lung cancer.
Gerard Smith, 36, was diagnosed last year with lung cancer, shortly after the band recorded its fifth album “Nine Types of Light,” which came out last Tuesday. Smith had been a member since 2005.
“We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer,” TV on the Radio said on its website yesterday. “We will miss him terribly.”
The band has canceled its next five shows, all in the Midwest.
The band’s label, Interscope Records, referred requests for comment to the band's publicist, who referred amNewYork to the band's statement.
